The government accountability office (GAO) said the transportation security administration (TSA) should examine air cargo weaknesses as 2.7 billion kilogrammes of air cargo is transported annually on passenger planes within the US.
The GAO also suggested the TSA re-examine the reasons some air cargo is excluded from random inspections and that the administration needs to look at whether carriers were meeting current security requirements.
Despite the introduction of measures since September 11, 2001, which include random cargo inspections, pilot security checks and a shippers database, critics say not enough has been done to prevent the smuggling of a bomb onto a passenger aircraft via a cargo shipment. |
